Don’t rain on her parade.

I love this column by Victoria Coren Mitchell.

The message is simple but oh so true. My truly lovely mother used to ‘helpfully’ point out when I was over my ideal weight (despite having several pounds in the savings bank herself I may add) and nothing drained the blood from my heart like those ‘suggestive comments’. The person who loved me most in the world thought there was something wrong with me? It only helped me build up my own cache of self loathing, which was always best soothed by pints of beer/ice cream/wine/sausage rolls…

I still have body image issues and will struggle with my weight forever probably but I am damned sure that I won’t be giving my daughter any helpful comments about her size. Simply feed her healthy nutritious meals, demonstrate the value of exercise by example and always tell her how completely amazing she is from the inside to the out.
